A concept of a different Hankido

When a martial art is introduced, the investigator always begin by making a historical analysis, geographic, trying to put the one who reads in a period of time where the vintage and perpetuation can be felt . There are roots that mark the physiognomy of a country and one of those roots are obviously martial arts. The pass of the time is encysted in the land of Korea. Its most dazzling samples are the archaeological rarities, the engravings in its caves, and the legacy of a humble and gentle race but warrior at the same time.

It was in Han river, and in the eastern mountains and in the multiple wars that the first strategy steps were written. It´s here where the warrior castes and the cleverness were born. The pass of the “blooming youth” aka “Hwa rangs” exalts the military pride of the three kingdoms in ancient Korea and their banners cross the peninsula achieving at last the dream of a united kingdom. The fighter code is governed by the prestigious “mojaedobodongji”, similar to the cavalry manual used by the cross monks in the medieval Europe, and genially interpreted by “Don Quijote” in the dream of Cervantes. Drawings, concepts, use of weapons, strategy and close combat among others, shape the martial experience and the brightness of the professional warrior “samul-abi” too. The years and the centuries do not stop the destiny and the martial life is in splendor and obscurantism. The Choson era of XIX century marks the ending of a time that was marked by the intellectualism from the Shilla period. The warriors are dying of leisure and as time goes by their lives are extinguishing like the charcoal. Only a few sparkles are left in the religious and upper class. The rising sun from Japan aims its rays to the world, and disrupts the ancient sounds of their closer neighbors. The glint of the “Katana” overshadows any attempt of resistance of this town and they even try to eliminate their language. The nightmare of this invasion, only ends when the 1945 armistice is signed, where remains the fear of an uncertain future and the willing to survive. From this last process, the martial arts emerge shy and they rise thank to the foreign influences, there is transition, there is confusion and the future is not clear. From this moment on, the hourglass starts to run.

The WebPages tell us how it all started. The name of “CHOI YON SUL” is a legend and from his sacrifice and technique the ancient vows of the Korean peninsula are renewed. HAPKIDO is reborn, military arts are reborn, martial arts are reborn, and also the sport branches. Hapkido is one of those paths for walking through again and discovering its spiritual treasure and technique.

Different leaders are born where they mark their own territory and dictate their proposals. From here, the different Hapkido federations are born. The Korea Hapkido, Korea Hapkido Federation, KIDO, World Hapkido Games Federation, HoeJong Moosool Federation, International Hapkido, Hankido, Hankumdo Federetation (IHF o HKD). All of them are based in a compact and homogenous concrete, they only will vary in their architecture.

The HKD Federation founded by our Grandmaster Myong JaeNam (Kook Sa Nim) is one of the federations that decided to build up, over this similar structure, a purely traditional old building, where the art of combat is assimilated in a global dimension, starting by the use of the body and the weapons as a whole, following the path of the natural rules of the universe. A path that integrates culture, through the Korean language and writing and heart, this last one inherited of the rescued principles of the noble arts. HANKIDO is the final product of this great and visionary master´s searching, which captured the illusion of a country in this great Martial Art.
